The city of Garland will celebrate a legend at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, when the new signage will be unveiled at the Ronald E. Jones Municipal Building, 800 Main Street. The former Main Street Municipal Building has been renamed to honor Jones’ lifetime of public service. That service includes five years as an assistant city manager in Garland and six years as its mayor.
Jones joined the city staff in April 1977. He led 14 departments and rose to the ranks of assistant city manager. Jones held that position during his final five years as a city of Garland employee. He then retired to run for Mayor. Jones won three-way races in 2007 and 2009, taking more than 83% of the vote in his reelection bid. He was unopposed in 2011.
Jones said he is looking forward to celebrating with family and friends, just as he did when the Garland City Council unanimously voted to rename the building the Ronald E. Jones Municipal Building at its Sept. 20, 2022, meeting.
The building is home to the city’s permitting processes, as well as its planners, engineers, transportation officials and others who are at the heart of city of Garland day-to-day operations.
