More than 220 special needs individuals and their families had a great time at the Special Ones Network Christmas party Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Hella Shrine Temple.
The event has enjoyed extraordinary growth since it started 11 years ago with 38 families. The founder of SON, Kristal Davis, along with her husband Dean Davis, recognized the need for more activities for special needs individuals and they work tirelessly throughout the year to provide more fun opportunities.
This year, attendees of the Christmas party were treated to lunch and lots of dessert choices. Each special needs individual received a gift and the families got free photos with Santa. Everyone got to explore a fire engine and a police car as well as visit with the firefighters and officers. There were games to play and prizes to win as well as clowns to take photos with.
Party-goers also made Christmas tree ornaments and placemats. The Ghostbusters were there in their specialized vehicles and motorcycle riders were on-hand to let the kids sit on their bikes. The Batmobile was even there for great photo opportunities.
Christmas and dance music filled the ballroom and everyone enjoyed dancing with the Silver Rhythm Dancers from Rowlett High School.
Kristal would like to thank all the donors, volunteers and groups that helped make the event special and added that they couldn’t make it without the assistance of friends and family members.
About SON: Our goal is to host events for all types of special needs individuals and their families. Living with an autistic child ourselves, we know activities are practically non-existent for these special ones. Our desire is to change this, one event at a time! SON is a 501c3 organization made up of all volunteers. One hundred percent of all donations goes toward our events. The organization’s president and CEO is Kristal Davis. Dean Davis is the vice-president.
