A prime Garland location is about to undergo a major transformation. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Jan. 24, to officially kick off the Shiloh Road Improvement Project, a $24 million partnership project between the city of Garland and Dallas County. Shiloh Road between Kingsley Road and McCree Road/South Garland Avenue is one of the busiest intersections in Garland. More than 75,000 vehicles travel the area off Interstate 635 every day. The 1-mile long project will include:
- Widening of Shiloh Road between 635 and Kingsley Road from four lanes to six lanes divided (approximately 1 mile).
- Drainage improvements to reduce roadway flooding on Shiloh Road and McCree Road.
- Channel erosion protection on Leon Road.
- New water and wastewater lines.
- New electrical transmission line that combines all overhead lines to improve roadway aesthetics.
- New lighting and streetscape to improve roadway aesthetics.
- Upgrades to the KCS signal crossing.
- Installation of a unique signal monotube structure at SH78 to reduce the number of poles at the intersection.
“This is the entryway to the city of Garland, and the improvements will be phenomenal for this area,” Mayor Lori Dodson said. “We want our front door to appear as attractive and inviting as possible.”
The Garland City Council and Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Theresa Daniel were on-hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. Dallas County is contributing $10 million for the project.
Dr. Daniel said, “We have always worked together and we will continue to work together. When you’re working together, things move better. You’re stronger in numbers and that’s a better way to do business.”
This important infrastructure and transportation project is expected to not only alleviate congestion but also serve as a catalyst for development of the old Hypermart site.
Mayor Pro Tem Rich Aubin, who represents District 5, which includes the project site, said, “I think we are going to see a real catalyst here for the area. It is not just a road we are building, but an opportunity we are bringing to this area for businesses, for residents to make a better Garland, to make more of Texas here and give people that canvas on which they can Make Their Mark on Garland, on Texas and the world.”
The city purchased the property in 2017. Demolition took place last summer. Commercial development such as RaceTrac and Hello Deluxe Car Wash is either complete or in progress in the immediate area.
