Garland ISD, Hazel Health partner for health care

Jun. 4, 2020

Because access to health care is a concern for families across the nation, Garland ISD has partnered with Hazel Health to help see that students receive the care they need. Throughout the summer, students will have access to FREE at-home virtual service for non-emergency ailments such as colds, flu, headaches, stomach aches and asthma. The care can be easily accessed on any device with an internet connection. Hazel Health will eventually transition into school nurse clinics throughout the district.

GISD’s Director of Health Services Renee Kotsopoulos said that educating students goes beyond the classroom.

“We want to ensure students have the skills to maintain great physical and mental health long after they leave our campuses,” she said. “Hazel Health has provided our students with access to medical care that may not have been accessible to some.”

Kotsopoulos added that one of the reasons they chose to partner with Hazel Health is because they have a shared vision: remove all barriers to education. Their flexibility allows their providers to meet students where they are.

“We trialed Hazel Health at several of our campuses this past school year. Knowing the difficulties many families are facing, Hazel Health offered to expand its services to all students enrolled in Garland ISD,” she said. “They truly have a passion for children’s health.”

The care is free for all GISD students and Hazel Health also has resources at their fingertips to provide to families.

At this difficult time with the COVID-19 pandemic and the added stress of the tragic murder and subsequent riots and violence, some students could be suffering from mental and emotional problems and Hazel Health is expanding its mental health resources daily.garland isd

“No one is turned away if they contact them,” Kotsopoulos said. “Hazel’s medical providers address psychosocial issues with every contact. If additional help is needed, they refer families to our Guidance and Counseling Department. GISD has a very robust counseling program in Garland ISD, and they are ready to provide support.”

The medical services will be available Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Click here to register your GISD student for free health care through their parent portal at my.hazel.co/patient/signup.

GISD’s partnership with Hazel Health is a significant benefit for students.

“We are extremely excited about our partnership with Hazel Health and look forward to having a positive impact on our students’ lives,” Kotsopoulos said..
