Garland library goes fine-free

Sep. 22, 2021

Garland library users have cause to celebrate this fall. The Library is going fine-free! This means the library will no longer charge late fees on materials returned after their due dates.

“We want everyone to feel welcome to come into our libraries,” library director Karen Archibald said. “We’ve been hard at work investigating ways to reduce or eliminate barriers to public library access for the Garland community. The financial hardship of library fines can deter someone from returning to the library. By eliminating those fines, we’re able to really begin breaking down a barrier that keeps some people from using their library. We want to say, “Welcome back!” There’s no shame and no judgment. Just bring your materials back.”

Library staff do ask that users be considerate of other patrons and return borrowed items at their earliest convenience. The library will still charge for lost or damaged items. The charge for a lost item is the replacement cost, plus a five-dollar processing fee.

For additional information library services, please visit the library online at www.Library.GarlandTX.gov, or call 972-205-2500.

Library staff and patrons can choose whether or not to wear masks. The library will continue to provide masks to anyone who wants one. They also ask that you wash your hands and make use of the many hand sanitizer stations throughout the Garland libraries.
