Garland nonprofit to feature Lenora Casmore as keynote speaker

Make plans to attend Saturday, Feb. 18, when Lenora Casmore will be keynote speaker at a free Garland event. Casmore, is a charter member of Remembering Black Dallas Inc. and a well-versed authority on the Reconstruction history of the Dallas area. The event, sponsored by the nonprofit Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street, will be at the Granger Recreation Center, 1310 West Avenue F in Garland’s Central Park. Casmore will speak from 1-2 p.m. Her appearance is in conjunction with the organization’s annual business meeting.

She will share about various sites in the Dallas area that were instrumental in the post-Civil War era and beyond. In addition, Casmore will also talk about efforts underway and completed to ensure that this aspect of history is preserved. She worked alongside RBDallas founder Dr. George E. Keaton who was considered the foremost historian of Black Dallas.’ She had been with him on many ofnonprofit his memorable bus tours around the various locations.

Keaton died suddenly Dec. 7, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.

Remembering Black Dallas (RBDallas) is a nonprofit organization that preserves and promotes the African American life, history, artifacts and culture of Dallas.

Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street is a charitable organization that works for the betterment of Garland. The organization pursues that goal through historic preservation, community development and improvement of Garland’s 11th Street (part of the Travis College Hill National Register Historic District) as well as the wider downtown area. A secondary purpose is to recognize under recognized individuals and sites that are part of Garland’s history.

Casmore, a Texas native, is a systems analyst by profession and an educational consultant on life matters. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of North Texas and an MBA in management from Amberton University. Casmore replaces Keaton, who was originally scheduled to be the keynote speaker.
