Garland Nursing/Rehab hosts chili cookoff

Nov. 1, 2023

Garland Nursing and Rehab recently held its second Employee Chili Cookoff. There was a large number of entries and the heat level went from mild to seriously spicy chili laced with habanero peppers! The cookoff judges took their jobs seriously, and it was easy to tell that they were enjoying their roles. Each carefully evaluated all the entries and kept scorecards for each.

Chili judges were:
  • Alan Flier, Dallas Harley Owners Club
  • Heather Wilson, works for the company that owns the nursing home
  • Matt Pesta, Garland Police Department Public Information Officer
  • Dugger, Garland Fire Department Investigator-Paramedicrehab
  • Crawford, Garland Fire Department Inspector-Paramedic

The Chili Cookoff winners were:

  • First place – Tammy Hernandez
  • Second place – Chris Lopez
  • Third place – Christy Redding

Each was rewarded with a cash prize.

In addition to the cookoff, one of the nursing home residents, Lavilla Smith, was celebrating her birthday. She was a very young 101 years old. Smith was delightful and a pleasure to visit with. She offered good advice about having a long life, saying that the key is to stay busy and enjoy what you do.

“I loved to garden and I canned, too. I was always busy, and I enjoyed it all,” Smith said. “I also had a good husband. That makes a big difference.”
