Friday, Aug. 9, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the Garland Police Department responded to a weapon involved disturbance at an apartment community in the 200 block of East Interstate 30. A caller said there was a male subject armed with two machetes, slashing tires and stabbing the hoods of cars that were parked in the parking lot.
The male subject was later identified as 52-year- old Jason Xavier Salas, a resident of Dallas.
Responding officers arrived and located the male subject in the parking lot wielding two large knives. The officers gave the male loud verbal directions to drop the knives. The commands were ignored and the male advanced toward the officers with both knives in hand.
Both officers, 13- and 3-year veterans, fired their duty weapons striking the subject. The male was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
As called for by standard procedure, Garland homicide detectives, along with members of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit, responded to the scene to investigate.
The officers will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with Garland Police Department policy.
The identity of the subject has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation is ongoing.
