Garland parents die in car accident; Go Fund Me account set up for children

May. 1, 2018

Both the mother and father in a family of nine passed away as the result of a car accident Monday, April 23, near Sulphur Springs. Michael Scott Owen, 52, and Jennifer Owen, 47, of Garland, along with six of their seven children were returning home from a camping trip when the accident occurred.

Scott and Jennifer were transported to a hospital in Tyler. Scott died from his injuries late Monday evening and Jennifer passed away early Thursday morning. Scott and Jennifer were both organ donors. Michaela Owen, 15 and Dalton Owen, 10, were transported to a hospital in Dallas where they remain in critical, but stable condition. Mitchell, 13, Alysa, 11, Samantha, 7, and Liam Owen, 5, miraculously survived the crash with broken bones, concussions, cuts and bruises.

They were taken to a Sulphur Springs hospital where they were treated and released. Ethan Owen, 23, the eldest son, who was not in the car, now carries the responsibility of hourly decisions that must be made regarding his two critically injured siblings and the other surviving four.

Dr. Craig Curry, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Plano stated, “Scott and Jennifer Owen were faithful leaders in our church and in the community. They had servant hearts and they were very family oriented. We are heart broken. This family is precious to us and we will do everything we can to help the Owen children now and in the future. We are asking any and all who are able to donate funds to support these kids.”

A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been set up for the Owen family at gofundme.com/owen-family-tribute. Also, First Baptist Church of Plano is receiving support for the Owen family through their local benevolence fund. Any donations designated LOCAL BENEVOLENCE given through fbcplano.org for the immediate future will go to support the Owen children.
