Garland will host its inaugural Juneteenth event from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Audubon Park, 550 W. Oates Road.
There will be something for everyone at the family festival, including an opportunity to learn about the historical significance of this federally recognized holiday. We’ll have dancers, children’s activities, speakers, a performance from the Buster Brown Band, an essay contest, vendors … and lots of canopy to offset the Texas sun!
With a welcoming invite reflective of her many years of service to Garland, Gwendolyn Daniels said she considers it an honor to be on the committee that crafted the event. Daniels will also be front and center during the celebration, reading the book “Juneteenth: A Children’s Story” authored by Opal Lee, the “grandmother of the movement” to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
“This is something we’ve needed to do in this community for a very long time,” Mayor Scott LeMay said.
Food trucks will be on-site or you can bring a pre-packed picnic basket. No open flames or grilling will be allowed in the park.
