#GARLANDSTRONG helps tornado victims

Jun. 6, 2016

One of the first answers residents give when asked why they like living in Garland is that even though it is a city of more than 230,000, it still feels like a small town. The generosity of the city’s businesses and individuals reflects that feeling. The manner in which Garland, as well as other North Texas residents and organizations, have responded to the needs of the tornado victims is not only amazing, it is proof that the spirit of giving is alive and well.

It is a long road back for families whose homes sustained severe damage or were completely destroyed and there are needs that cannot be met by insurance companies and other agencies. The city of Garland, through its #GARLANDSTRONG campaign, continues to raise funds to assist affected residents.

Several unique items are available for purchase as a part of the fundraising campaign. Wristbands are being sold for $5, T-shirts are available for $10 and yard signs are $20. All monies raised will support the #GARLANDSTRONG campaign. (T-shirts are available in sizes small, medium, large, extra large and 2XL.)

Items are available while supplies last at #GARLANDSTRONG booths at local events as well as online. To place an order and to arrange pickup, contact GarlandStrong@GarlandTx.gov.

Cash donations are accepted at GarlandStrong.com.

Atmos Energy started the fundraising effort with a $50,000 contribution donated through its Atmos Energy/Robert W. Best Charitable Giving Fund. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and Medieval Times each gave $20,000 and R-Delta Engineers added $10,000. Storm Assist, LLC donated more than $6,400. TPV Global US and the Hiep Thai Food Store LTA each gave $5,000. Rock the Storm Fundraiser gave more than $4,500, Laura M. McCutcheon donated more than $3,500 and the Garland Emergency Corps, Inc. gave $2,000.

Numerous other businesses and individuals have also made cash donations.

Anyone who can help by purchasing a fundraising item or making a cash donation is encouraged to do so. All cash donations, no matter the amount, are appreciated.
