The first show in Garland’s Music Made Here Concert Series was Friday, March 4 on the Downtown Square. Guthrie Kennard opened the show with a set of great music and got the audience fired up for the headliner Gary P. Nunn.
Nunn has enjoyed a long and successful career and has the distinction of being an original member of the outlaw country group of singer/songwriters that emerged in the 1970s. His discography includes a long list of well-known, popular songs.
He wowed the audience with a great selection of his own songs, including “Adios Amigos,” “That’s What I Like About Texas,” “The Girl Just Loves to Dance” and the iconic “London Homesick Blues.”
In addition, Nunn included some well-known covers that included a nice rendition of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” “Your Song” by Elton John and a medley of songs by the Beatles.
He also included one of his originals, “The Last Thing I Needed the First Thing this Morning,” that has been recorded by Willie Nelson, and more recently, by Chris Stapleton.
Nunn also shared fun stories about performing with other outlaw country originals like Jerry Jeff Walker and Michael Martin Murphey.
At the age of 78, he continues to have the energy of a much younger performer. And, he still presents long, lively shows for audiences.
The young kids at the concert had a great time dancing and running around and having fun in front of the stage. A few adult couples also joined in the dancing fun.
This concert, along with the future concerts of the Music Made Here series are sponsored by Jimmy Wallace Guitars and Veritex Community Bank. See a list of upcoming shows below.
Come early and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the downtown Garland restaurants before the show!
