GCT’s latest production is ‘un-rockin’-believable’

Jan. 27, 2019

Garland Civic Theatre’s production of “Buddy, the Buddy Holly Story” can only be described one way – ‘un-rockin’-believable.’ It’s fun, energetic, well-acted and features some of the best music ever made. Anyone who is even a little familiar with the legend of Buddy Holly knows that he packed more music into his tragically short, 18-month career than many musicians create in a lifetime. Holly influenced music legends including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen and his songs have been covered by an elite list of rockers.

GCT’s production not only showcases the innovative style of the young rocker’s music, it also captures his determination to create his art his way without compromise. Despite Holly’s age, he was independent and headstrong and refused to let anyone have control over the music he played.

The show includes a long list of Holly’s hits including “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy,” “True Love Ways,” “Everyday,” “Not Fade Away” and so many more.

Ian Mead Moore is great in the role of Buddy Holly. He makes the music his own but doesn’t forget to add the occasional “hiccup” that Holly was famous for. Moore said that he completely immersed himself in the role for two months before the show. His hard work and dedication are evident in his portrayal.

Jonathan Garcia and Colin Philips in the roles of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper are also delightful. Garcia’s rendition of Richie Valens’ “LaBamba,” as well as Philips version of the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace,” are energy-filled and entertaining.

Garcia said that he was already familiar with the music of Richie Valens and he is grateful to be portraying him in this production.

Tracy Pullin, Damond Cobin, Brandon Baker and Anthony Holmes combine their talents for an acapella version of “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” and Sandy Young also gets to showcase her voice when she joins them in a rendition of “Shout.”

The remainder of the actors and musicians, Bill Zauner, Jaren Lorenzo, Phil Gosselin, Sarah Garcia, Ashley Collum and Erin McGrew, also deserve separate recognition.

The show’s director, Dennis Canright, also had a small part in the show and designed the effectively simple sets. Producers are David Tinsley and Cheryl Pellett. Music director is Scott A. Eckert.

The remaining shows are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 10. Visit www.garlandcivic.org for more information.
