The Garland Fire Department has received a Class 1 ISO rating, the highest Public Protection Classification by the Insurance Service Organization.
A community’s Public Protection Classification is based on a formal assessment of three major areas:
- Fire department (staffing, equipment, training, and emergency response capabilities)
- Water supply system (highlighting the water supply a community uses for fire suppression)
- Fire alarm and communications system (centers on facilities and support for handling and dispatching alarms)
The ISO evaluation of a fire department accounts for 50 percent of the rating; water supply accounts for 40 percent. The department’s communication system accounts for the final 10 percent. The ISO evaluation also includes a Community Risk Reduction section which recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety education and fire investigation.
The quality and effectiveness of fire protection in a community is measured by the ISO rating. Additionally, the rating allows residential and commercial property owners the opportunity to obtain the best possible insurance rates.
