GFD hosts Citizens Fire Academy

Jun. 4, 2019

The Garland Fire Department, through the Citizen’s Fire Academy, is proud to provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in a program which is intended to promote a greater understanding of the mission, responsibilities and activities of the GFD. This is accomplished through education, demonstration and most importantly, participation.

Class members have the opportunity to participate in various “hands-on” operations. Some will be challenging, but these tasks are strictly voluntary. Participants will be exposed to the many and varied functions of the fire department in an interesting, informative and rewarding experience.

The next academy begins Sept. 5 and lasts for eight weeks. Meetings are held Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each week, with the exception of the first Thursday, which begins at 6 p.m. The class culminates with a Graduation and Burn day Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to 40 p.m.

Upon completing this program, participants will have knowledge of the operations and capabilities of the Garland Fire Department as well as be able to create a safer home and work environment.

GFD hopes that academy participants will take what they learn into the community by sharing it with friends and associates, thereby helping to foster a better understanding of the services the GFD provides for the community.

Applications are accepted in order received. Class size is limited and once full we will hold remaining applications for the next class.
