GHS coach invents Thunder Spiker for volleyball

Coach Johnny McCoy, the founder and owner of J MAC DESIGNS is the inventor of the THUNDER SPIKER for volleyball players of all ages. McCoy loves to see student athletes succeed and said that his invention is what younger players need to learn the spiking and hitting approach and more.volleyball

​The THUNDER SPIKER elevates the skill level of its users. Volleyball clubs, beginners, middle school, high school, parks and recreation centers and more benefit from its use.

McCoy was a gifted athlete at Garland High School. He was on the basketball and football teams, and he ran track. He was on the 1977 GHS State Champion 4X100 relay team and was a candidate for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. He also played professional football in the Canadian and United States Football Leagues.

McCoy lettered in track, football and basketball and earned awards and recognitions for his athletic accomplishments. Additionally, he was inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and now serves on the hall of fame board. He was once the Track Coach of the Year by the Dallas Morning News. He has also served as assistant coach for the girls’ track team.volleyball

He and his wife Starla have four children: Monique, Tommy, Johnnica and Johnny Jr. Monique was recently joined her father in the Garland Sports Hall of Fame.

“Our goal is to provide something special for the world of volleyball players without leaving anyone out,” McCoy said.
