GHS Speech and Debate Team shines at tournament

The Garland High School Speech and Debate Team is celebrating after competing at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier this month. Seven talented students qualified for this year’s event, up from just four qualifiers last year.

The Garland High School Speech and Debate Team is celebrating their outstanding achievements at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier this month. The team’s hard work paid off this year, with seven talented students qualifying for the event, up from just four last year.

After competing over six days against 6,000 students from 1,200 schools nationwide, several team members brought home awards:

  • Joshua Eneji: Original Oratory Semifinalist, finished 8th out of 277
  • Adaolisa Agbakwu: Dramatic Interpretation Semifinalist, finished 7th out of 254
  • Gabriel Aina: Dramatic Interpretation Quarterfinalist, finished 25th out of 254
  • Carrington Haynes: Dramatic Interpretation Octafinalist, finished 36th out of 254 competitors

In addition to individual successes, the Garland High School team received the prestigious Speech School of Excellence trophy for placing in the top 20 speech schools in the nation.

“I am incredibly proud of these amazing students and all they’ve accomplished,” said the team’s coach. “Their dedication and hard work have truly paid off. I can’t wait to see what we achieve next year with the continued support of our wonderful community.”
