The Texas Education Agency recently released new school district ratings measuring academic performance for 2018, and Garland ISD received an overall letter grade of B. Under the TEA’s new state accountability system, districts are no longer rated Met Standard or Improvement Required.
GISD’s 2018 letter grade was based mainly on data from State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests administered in the spring, in addition to growth from previous testing. With TEA’s new rating system built on an average score, the district is pleased to have performed above expectations.
Garland ISD Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López stated, “We are proud of the work our staff does to ensure college and career readiness for all Garland ISD students, and we celebrate their academic successes. The feedback we get from the state will help us continue to make progress toward our goal of improving student achievement and providing an exceptional education to every child. We are within sight of an A rating and have multiple measures in place for a very bright future in Garland ISD. We are starting strong and charging on.”
Along with letter grade ratings, TEA also provided information about individual campus distinctions.
Garland ISD had five campuses that earned all available distinction designations: Lakeview Centennial High School, Classical Center at Brandenburg Middle School, Kimberlin and Walnut Glen Academies for Excellence and Spring Creek Elementary School.
Two campuses also earned all but one of the possible TEA distinctions: Garland High School and Hillside Academy for Excellence.
Six GISD campuses earned all but two available distinction designations: North Garland High School, Austin Academy for Excellence, Jackson and Beaver Technology Centers for Math and Science, Roach Elementary School and Sewell Elementary School.
Overall, 31 campuses in the district earned at least one distinction, including each of the district high school campuses, an increase from the previous year.
TEA plans to release official letter grade ratings for individual campuses in August of 2019.
