Helping the South Garland High School boys basketball team make history this season with a Final Four finish at the UIL state tournament, junior Tyrese Maxey also made history of his own. He tied the record for the most points scored by one player in a class 6A state tournament game.
That record-setting score was 46 points, and it not only garnered many social media shout-outs. It also earned him the title of SportsDay High School Player of the Year for 2018. It may have led to his selection to participate in the NCAA Next Generation event as well. This prestigious opportunity took place before the men’s college basketball championship at the beginning of April. Just 24 elite juniors from across the nation received an invitation to play for the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Select Team.
With accomplishments like these, it comes as no surprise that Maxey is a top-ranked point guard recruit both in the state and across the nation. He has received approximately 20 scholarship offers already, including several Division I colleges.
Maxey’s other accomplishments include an invitation to attend the USA Basketball U18 Junior National Team Training Camp this summer. He was chosen by the Dallas Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars to attend a Youth Leadership Conference as well.
Garland ISD added to Maxey’s list with an Evidence of Excellence award that was presented to him at the April 10 Board of Trustees meeting.
“There are multiple Trustees, in addition to our Superintendent and many members of his Cabinet, who were in San Antonio to see your incredible performance,” said Board President Larry Glick. “We congratulate you.”
