Garland ISD has announced that its board of trustees has been named an Outstanding School Board finalist for the 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards.
The Garland ISD School Board is one of five statewide finalists selected for the distinguished achievement. The seven-member board is comprised of president Linda Griffin, vice president Robert Selders Jr., secretary Johnny Beach, assistant secretary Daphne Stanley and Trustees Larry H. Glick, Jamie Miller and Wes Johnson. The board is responsible for governing the district, making decisions about educational programs and communicating with the Garland, Rowlett and Sachse communities.
“The Garland ISD school board is honored to be nominated,” said Linda Griffin, board president. “Being one of the five finalists demonstrates that others have seen us implement our board mission: reaching the future by driving excellence one student at a time. It shows that we are providing resources and pathways for all students to succeed.”
The award is designed to recognize school boards that have demonstrated real leadership in the community. It is based on three criteria: academic/student progress within the district, identification of community needs and specific actions taken based on those needs and new and creative methods for community engagement.
Each year, the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards highlight Texas educators, administrators, school boards and early childhood facilities going above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of their students and communities.
“Having our GISD Trustees as H-E-B Outstanding School Board finalists showcases the excellence happening in our great district,” said Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López. “Each trustee is fully committed to ensuring our students are set for college, careers, and life and ensuring our resources support that vision and the results speak for themselves. They truly are champions for children.”
According to H-E-B, a panel of judges will visit each district/school board to engage with administration, staff, parents and community members to determine statewide winners.
The GISD board of trustees will receive $5,000 for being named a finalist. The board may also receive a special judge’s award totaling up to $25,000. Winners will be announced at the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony on Sunday, May 5.
In 2023, Garland ISD was named a H-E-B Excellence in Education finalist in the large school district category.
