The Garland Independent School District (GISD) is thrilled to announce that Herfurth Elementary School has been named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School. The U.S. Department of Education officially announced this Tuesday, Sept. 19.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Garland Independent School District has a storied history of academic achievement, with eight schools previously honored with the National Blue Ribbon distinction 13 times. Among these esteemed institutions are Kimberlin Academy of Excellence, Austin Academy of Excellence, Lyles Middle School, Walnut Glen Academy, Roach Elementary, Centerville Elementary, Brandenburg Middle School and Hillside Academy of Excellence.
A New Chapter in Rowlett
Today, we proudly add a new chapter to this legacy. Herfurth Elementary and its elite Montessori program join this exclusive circle for the first time in Rowlett, marking the 14th Blue Ribbon accolade for Garland ISD.

Soon, the National Blue Ribbon flag will be displayed with pride at Herfurth Elementary. It will symbolize GISD’s unwavering commitment to academic rigor and community engagement. This flag is not just a piece of fabric but a testament to the collective efforts of our students, educators, families and community.
