Students from seven Garland ISD high schools recently came together to celebrate the holidays with their younger counterparts. Keeping an 18-year tradition alive, DECA chapters from Garland, Lakeview Centennial, Naaman Forest, North Garland, Rowlett, Sachse and South Garland high schools hosted a holiday party for preschool students at the Gale Fields Recreation Center.
Just as they do every year, DECA students met at Build-A-Bear Workshop to customize bears for each child. The high schoolers also created handmade ornaments and stuffed stockings full of goodies in preparation for the holiday event.
“GISD pays for the preschoolers’ transportation on the day of the party,” said Global Business Magnet Advisor Tracy Glick. “The DECA students then deliver the bears and other goodies to the preschool students. They also play games and color while they wait to see Santa.”
This annual act of charity helps DECA students in more ways than one.
“It is a rewarding experience for the DECA students to give to those in need,” Glick explained. “They also learn to organize and plan a large event.”
