Routinely going above and beyond to make North Texas a healthier place to live. Those words are not only the motto of D Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Contest. They also perfectly describe Garland ISD’s own Rebecca Cherry. The special education treatment nurse at Lakeview Centennial High School was recently named a winner of the 2016 competition, chosen among a small group from hundreds of nominees.
D Magazine began its search for the area’s top practitioners five years ago. It recognizes the importance of this first contact at a doctor’s office. Local hospitals, private practices, doctors and patients were asked to submit nominations showing how nurses affected lives, the community and their profession. Editors then selected the best and sent them to a judging panel of registered nurses in various fields. Scores were compiled and used to select the winners.
Lakeview Centennial staff nominated Nurse Cherry.
“She loves our students and this can be easily seen,” they said. “Any time one of our students and their family has a crisis, she goes above and beyond to help.”
“One of our students was in ICU for more than three weeks. Nurse Cherry raised money so her mother—a single parent—could be at the hospital and not worry how she was going to pay her bills.”
“One of our student’s homes was broken into at Christmas and Nurse Cherry raised money so the family could gather back the stolen items.”
“Nurse Cherry has organized and run a golf tournament to raise money for terminally ill students and to fund scholarships.”
As an Excellence in Nursing winner, Cherry will be featured in the March issue of D Magazine.
