Planetarium brings learning to life

Apr. 15, 2023

Garland Independent School District is taking its lessons to the next level by introducing a state-of-the-art 360-degree domed screen with interactive simulations at Lakeview Centennial’s Planetarium. Planetarium technology provides teachers a mesmeric and interactive experience for their students, employees and families.

Using the Starry Night and Layered Earth software, the Planetarium can stimulate the day and night sky at any location on Earth during past, present and future periods. This cutting-edge technology enables students to immerse themselves in astronomical concepts, making learning more engaging and memorable.

Currently, the Planetarium offers programs for prekindergarten, kindergarten, third-grade, fourth-grade, fifth grade and high school astronomy students. In April, third grade students in GISD are attending shows and interactive sessions at the facility.

The science curriculum for third graders in Texas has a unit that focuses on the solar system. The Planetarium helps GISD students know the planets and their background information, understand how the Earth, Sun, and Moon move around the solar system, and help students discover what is in the night sky. Learning is achieved through dome shows and interactive lessons.

The GISD facility also hosts nighttime shows for employee families. The last show of the season is coming up. Please check the district calendar or the Planetarium website for more information.

The Garland Independent School District is committed to providing the best possible education for its students, and the Planetarium is just one of the many ways they are helping students reach for the stars. With this exciting technology, the district’s teachers can take their lessons to the next level and provide their students with an exciting and engaging learning experience.
