GISD campuses earn highest accountability rating

Oct. 1, 2016

Approximately 400 schools across the state achieved a Met Standard rating, in addition to achieving all distinction designations that are available.

Garland ISD is home to seven of those campuses earning both the Met Standard rating and all distinctions: Austin, Hillside, Kimberlin and Walnut Glen Academies for Excellence, Roach and Spring Creek Elementary Schools and North Garland High School. This marks an increase from last year’s performance in which four district schools earned all possible distinction designations.

“Earning one or more campus distinctions is noteworthy and should be a source of pride in a community,” said Commissioner of Education Mike Morath in a press release. “Earning all possible distinctions is a significant accomplishment and should signal to parents that there is extraordinary work taking place on that campus.”

This year, 65 GISD campuses and the district as a whole received a Met Standard rating. Two additional campuses received a Met Alternative Standard rating and two others a Met Standard-Paired rating. The remaining two schools received Improvement Required ratings, which are currently being appealed.

GISD had two schools that were rated Improvement Required in 2015. Both campuses were awarded a Met Standard rating this year and one of those campuses also earned a distinction designation.

In total, 35 campuses in GISD now hold one or more distinction designations. Distinction designations can be earned for Academic Achievement in English Language Arts, Academic Achievement in Mathematics, Academic Achievement in Science, Academic Achievement in Social Studies, Top 25% Student Progress, Top 25% in Closing Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness.

“While we do not solely use accountability ratings to evaluate our campuses, these validate both the dedication of staff and hard work of students across the district,” said Superintendent Bob Morrison. “We will remain committed to preparing our students for success by focusing on college and career readiness. I commend all GISD campuses for the exceptional efforts I see every day.”
