GISD sees AP student acknowledgment increase

Jan. 2, 2019

Six years ago, Garland ISD embarked on a mission to grow Advanced Placement participation and achievement. Students enrolled in AP courses have the advantage of earning college credit while in high school. Thanks to the development of a strong Advanced Placement program and team, nearly 700 students received AP acknowledgments this year—a 19 percent increase from 2017.

“We had 695 GISD students who were recognized through the AP Scholar program,” said Director of Research, Assessment & Accountability Kim Caddell. “This is our highest level in any of the years that we’ve received these outcomes. All seven high schools have students recognized this year.”

Garland ISD is the proud home of 465 AP Scholars, 109 AP Scholars with Honor, 119 AP Scholars with Distinction, 10 National AP Scholars, nine AP Seminar & Research Certificate honorees and four AP Capstone Diploma recipients.

“Success doesn’t just happen. You have to plan for it and Garland ISD has implemented layers of supports for the AP program,” said Advanced Academics Administrator Kristyn Edney.“ There are four pillars that have supported these successes. The NMSI College Readiness Program, student supports, an AP Leadership Team and a robust communication and recruiting plan.”

Because of Garland ISD’s focus on Advanced Placement, students received more than $150,000 through the NMSI program, earned more than 10,000 potential college credits and saved more than $3.3 million in potential college tuition.
