Garland ISD promotes safe and effective digital learning throughout the year. However, online safety, privacy and manners take center stage every September during GISD Cybersafety Week.
Students across all grade levels learn about digital footprints, cyberbullying, copyright, netiquette and more. One of the highlights of the week is the annual Cybersafety Poster Contest, which challenges students to create an engaging ad for a chance to win a techy prize. Sewell Elementary School’s Skyler Shaffer and Austin Academy for Excellence’s Jasmine John were named this year’s district winners, each receiving a sphero SPRK+ educational robot for their art pieces.
In order to receive the grand prize, each campus selected one winning entry to be submitted to the district level. A district panel then judged all campus winners and selected one elementary and one secondary winner. Second and third-place honorees were also selected in each category. Elementary
First place – Skyler Shaffer, fourth-grader at Sewell Elementary School
Second place – Sofia Ortega, fifth-grader at Bradfield Elementary School
Third place – Paola Martinez, fifth-grader at Caldwell Elementary School
Secondary
First place – Jasmine John, sixth-grader at Austin Academy for Excellence
Second place – Hillary Tran, sixth-grader at Jackson Technology Center for Math & Science
Third place – Angela Davis, eighth-grader at Classical Center at Brandenburg Middle School
