GISD trustee Linda Griffin receives award

Garland ISD board of trustees member Linda Griffin was recently received the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, Kappa Zeta Chapter 2021 Woman of the Year award.

The chapter’s statement referred to Griffin as a highly respected educator, businesswoman and community activist. It was also noted that she is known for her efforts to improve public education focusing on her ABC Motto of Service, ‘Always Benefiting Children.’

Griffin has been the Garland ISD Place 3 board of trustees member since 1998. She served as president of the Garland ISD board of trustees in 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2016. Griffin has also served as the board’s assistant secretary, vice president and secretary.

She has received numerous awards through the years. Some of these include the Outstanding Texan Award for 2019 – Texas Legislative Black Caucus; Trustee

of the Year 2019 – Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE); Dallas County Commissioner’s Distinguished Service Award for 2017 – Dallas County Commissioner’s Court; and Women of the Year –National Business and Professional Women (Dallas) – 2011.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was organized at Howard University in Washington D.C. in January 1920. The founders were Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. They sought to start a new organization based on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood.

The sorority’s chapters have given countless hours of volunteer service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change.
