GISD update, meal delivery changes

Apr. 7, 2020

The Garland ISD published the following updates and meal delivery changes on its website April 6.

  • April 10, 2020, will remain a staff/student holiday.
  • Learn how to navigate technology carefully and create a safe online learning environment with the help of our digital citizenship guidelines for families
  • For the week of April 6–9, free meal pickup will be only one time per day: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.at the 33 campus locations.  Breakfasts will be included in the lunch meal pickup. There will be no free meal pickup on the April 10 Student/Staff holiday; however, extra food will be sent home on Thurs., April 9. See details on the curbside meals page.
  • Our video contest winners were announced today. See the results on the #GISDAlwaysConnected Video Contest page.
  • Initial returns show that Texas lags the rest of the nation in completing the 2020 US Census. According to the initial data, the self-response rate in Texas is 31.3 percent, compared to 36.2 nationally.  The George Washington Institute of Public Policy has estimated that every one percent undercount costs Texas nearly $300 million in federal funding— more than any other state. The census can be filled out and submitted by mail, online, or over the phone in English and 12 other languages. For more information about the census, see our Census 2020 page.

What we’re doing

  • working to provide technology devices for those students who need them
  • developing learning activities for students to do at home
  • providing meals for students
  • continuing to closely monitor the potential impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Dallas County and follow guidance provided by local health organizations
  • frequently using a preventive antimicrobial misting system at all facilities and on our buses to thoroughly and widely disinfect
  • making adjustments to our attendance policies to support students who need to self-quarantine (see the 3/6/20 update for more details)
