GPD addresses street racing problem

Jun. 5, 2021

Over the past several weeks the Garland Police Department (GPD) arrested five individuals for street racing in the North Garland area. In addition to the charges of racing on a highway, one driver was found to be intoxicated.

THE STATE LEGISLATURE HAS RECENTLY PASSED A BILL THAT WILL ALLOW POLICE TO SEIZE VEHICLES OF DRIVERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN STREET RACES, AND HAVE MULTIPLE OFFENSES, CAUSES DEATH, OR IS INTOXICATED.

Street racing will not be tolerated in the City of Garland and those who engage in these types of activities will face consequences that will result in jail time and numerous fines and fees.

Convicted first-time racing offenders will pay a fine of up to $2,000 and spend up to 180 days in jail. If serious bodily injury or death occurs as a result of racing on a highway they will face fines up to $10,000 and spend up to 20 years in prison. Offenders may also have their vehicles seized.

Racing is reckless and dangerous for everyone in the community. Don’t take the chance; it’s not worth the risk.
