The Garland Police Department stepped up Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols from Friday, Dec. 16 through Sunday, Jan. 1. The additional enforcement resulted in the following:
- 64 Traffic Stops
- 68 Citations
- 26 Warnings
- 2 other arrests made
*During the same period as a department, 12 DWI arrests were made.
The increased DWI patrols are a project that is funded through a TXDOT grant program that targets DWI and Driving Under the Influence of Minors. #EndTheStreak
Drinking and driving is 100% preventable and can have serious physical, emotional and financial consequences that can last for years.

TXDOT statistics:
- 3,896 people were killed in crashes in Texas in 2020.
- 958 people were killed in crashes where a driver was under the influence.
- 205,498 people were injured in 2020 crashes. 14,656 suffered serious injuries.
There are many sober ride options available. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare service, stay put, call a friend or family member or use mass transit to ensure you don’t drive impaired.
