GPD announces “Operation Slowdown” results

During the increased enforcement period for “Operation Slowdown,” Garland police officers issued 560 citations for speeding. From Friday, July 19 to Sunday, Aug. 4, the Garland Police Department, working in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), stepped up enforcement across the city to reduce speeding and increase road safety through “Operation Slowdown.”

Garland police officers focused their enforcement efforts on high-traffic areas and known hotspots for speeding.

The additional enforcement for the grant resulted in:

Grant Specific:

  • 55   enforcement hours
  • 179 traffic stops
  • 197 citations
    • 106 Speeding
    • 91 all others (Red light, stop signs, seatbelts, no DL, fail to maintain financial responsibility (no insurance)
  • 76   warnings, 37 of which were for Speeding

During the same time, Garland’s regular patrols issued 454 Speeding citations.

According to TxDOT, speeding was a contributing factor in nearly 25% of all fatal crashes in Texas in 2023, resulting in over 1,200 deaths.
