GPD cracks down on street racing

Apr. 13, 2021

The Garland Police Department is cracking down on street racers. Over the weekend, GPD officers targeted street racing and reckless driving. This led to the arrest of two individuals and the issuance of several citations to motorists in the North Garland area near Lavon Drive and Naaman School Road. Officers also recovered one unlawfully possessed handgun from a driver.

Street racing will not be tolerated in the city of Garland. Those who engage in these types of activities will face consequences that will result in jail time, along with numerous fines and fees.

Convicted first-time racing offenders will pay a fine of up to $2,000 and spend up to 180 days in jail. If serious bodily injury or death occurs as a result of racing on a highway they will face fines up to $10,000 and spend up to 20 years in prison.

In addition, other costs associated with convicted offenders of racing on a highway can include impound fees, traffic citation fines, bail, legal fees, court appearances, court-ordered classes and other expenses. Offenders could also face insurance rate increases or policy cancellations.

GPD asks motorists to please not take the chance; it’s not worth the risk.
