GPD officer arrested for intoxication assault

Jan. 10, 2022

Fox 4 News recently reported a Jan. 1 vehicle crash in which Louis Ellis, a Garland police officer, is accused of striking 25-year-old Jameka Brown. The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Inwood Road and Galleria Drive in Dallas. Ellis was allegedly intoxicated and the Farmers Branch PD has charged the officer with intoxication assault with a vehicle. Ellis has been placed on administrative leave by the Garland Police Department pending an internal investigation. He has been with the GPD for two years.

As a result of the crash, Jameka is currently in the ICU at Parkland Hospital. At one point while she was in surgery, Jameka suffered a collapsed lung and the surgery had to be stopped. She was then placed on a ventilator. Even though she no longer requires the use of a ventilator, details provided to Fox 4 News by Jameka’s mother, Temika Wesley, indicate that her daughter will require the use of a wheelchair for three to six months as she recovers.

On Jan. 1, Jameka and her sister Jaquita Brown were in a car driven by Jaquita when they had a fender bender. Jameka exited the car to take photos of the damage. It was at that time that Ellis allegedly jumped the curb and hit Jameka.

Jaquita, who witnessed the impact, said that Jameka was thrown about 20 feet. She also said that Ellis did not exit his car at first. Instead, he stayed inside the vehicle making phone calls. She added that when he did exit his vehicle and approach the sisters, he was saying that he “didn’t hit her.”

Wesley said that neither Ellis nor anyone from the Garland PD had checked on her daughter.

The Farmers Branch Police Department is conducting the investigation into the incident.
