Sep. 6, 2021

Update: Tuesday, Sept. 7

The charges of murder – evading arrest – causing serious bodily injury have been filed against Bobby Lee Murphy for the death of Karla Rico and the injury caused to the 10-year-old boy who is still in critical condition. Murphy continues to remain in the hospital with serious injuries but will soon be transferred to the custody of Dallas County. The investigation continues to be active.

Saturday, Sept. 4, at around 2:30 a.m. Garland police officers responded to a crash westbound on Highway 66 between Dexham Road and East Centerville Road. Investigators believe one vehicle, a tan SUV, rear-ended a maroon passenger car causing it to hit the concrete barrier, overturn, then crash and burn in a ditch.

The two occupants in the maroon passenger car were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the tan SUV, 30-year-old Gustavo Huerta Jr., remained on the scene. The investigation led officers to believe Huerta was impaired. Huerta was arrested and charged with two counts of Intoxication Manslaughter.

He is currently in the Garland Detention Center. No bond has been set.

The victims have not been identified at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
