GPD officers rescue driver from burning car

Officer Chris Hataway, a 22-year veteran of the Garland Police Department (GPD), and Officer Matthew Fuhs, a 5-year veteran rescued an unconscious male from a burning car in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Their heroic action saved the life of the driver as they were able to pull him out of the car through a window just before it became completely engulfed in flames.

The officers’ bodycam video, released Thursday, Oct. 14, documents the officers fighting intense heat remove the man from the car.

In addition, a passenger in the car was ejected and the officers pulled him a safe distance away from the burning vehicle.

Both men were transported to the hospital and both their injuries were non-life-threatening.

GPD expressed pride in the actions of the officers.

The accident happened at the corner of Forest Lane and Marion Drive, a very short distance from the Garland Police Department.
