Beginning Friday, June 21, through Sunday, July 7, the Garland Police Department will step up patrols to combat impaired driving during the Independence Day celebrations. This initiative, part of the Impaired Driver Mobilization (IDM) project funded by TXDOT, targets Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by minors.
The patrols will be focused on evenings and nighttime, and the department will use marked and unmarked police cars.
Why It Matters:
Drunk driving is a critical issue in Texas. In 2022, 1,162 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. The number represents an average of three fatalities per day. The Garland Police Department aims to reduce these tragedies through heightened patrols and increased vigilance.
The consequences of a DWI conviction are serious.
- Penalties: First-time offenders face fines, license suspension for up to a year and up to 180 days in jail.
- Financial Impact: Costs can exceed $17,000, including bail, legal fees, court costs, mandatory classes and higher insurance premiums.
Safety Reminder:
The Garland Police Department urges everyone to plan ahead. Think of not only your own safety, but the safety of everyone else on the road. Use a designated driver, rideshare or public transportation.
The message is simple: “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail.” This effort is part of the broader #EndTheStreak campaign to stop the daily fatalities on Texas roads.
Celebrate responsibly and keep our roads safe. For updates on the enforcement campaign, follow the Garland Police Department on social media or visit their website.
Stay safe, plan your ride and enjoy a happy Independence Day.
