Garland Power & Light has made a significant commitment to renewable energy with long-term power purchase agreements for wind and solar resources. By spring 2017, the utility will have enough renewable power to meet about 35 percent of its annual energy needs. All GP&L customers will receive renewable energy as part of the power they use every day.
Currently, two Texas wind farms each provide up to 50 megawatts of power to GP&L. Spinning Spur 3 in the Panhandle and Los Vientos 5 in South Texas both began commercial operations in 2015.
Three more renewable projects will come online within the next 12 months. The Salt Fork Panhandle wind farm will provide GP&L with 35 megawatts, and the Albercas wind farm in South Texas will provide an additional 25 megawatts by the end of 2016. GP&L will begin receiving 50 megawatts of solar power from the Lamesa development in West Texas in March 2017.
“GP&L is proud to power Garland with competitively priced, renewable resources. I am pleased that we have been able to further diversify our power portfolio with these three additional projects,” General Manager/CEO Jeff Janke said.
