The Garland Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) recently recognized the 2020-2021 inductees. They are listed below.
Mike Baker attended Texas A&M University then began working in the Cramer Student Trainer program at Baylor University. He also worked in the sports medicine programs at Austin College and SMU.
Baker earned a master’s degree at East Texas State University then began work as an athletic trainer at Garland HS where he stayed from 1973 through 1987. He moved to Lakeview Centennial HS in 1988 and stayed there until 1996.
When Rowlett HS opened in 1996, Baker moved there to develop the student trainer program. He spent seven years at Rowlett HS and one year at North Garland HS. After his 2005 retirement, Baker missed the work and returned to Garland HS in 2009.
M.G. Garvin was public address announcer at Garland ISD athletic events from 1972 – 2015. He started out announcing Little League games while he was in junior HS.
He was the choir teacher at Sellers MS and Sam Houston MS and always supported the coaches and their sports programs. Garvin volunteered to announce football games at the GISD junior high field in the early 70s and soon after, Homer B. Johnson hired him to announce games at Williams Stadium. He called games there from 1974 until his death in 2015.
Garvin loved sports and was a Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys fan. He also loved travel and photography and enjoyed trips to Switzerland, England and Austria.
Trecey Rew-Hoover, a 2006 Garland HS graduate, participated in track and field and basketball. She holds the shot put record and was the 2006 district and regional shot put champion. She placed third in shot put at the State Track Meet.
Rew-Hoover attended Northwestern State University and was named All Southland Conference 12 times. She earned eight Southland Conference titles, three NCAA All-American awards and was the 2011 NCAA National Champion in discus. She currently holds Northwestern State’s All-Conference records in shot put and discus.
Rew-Hoover earned a master’s degree and was an Academic All-American in 2011, a multi-year member of the Southland Conference All Academic Team and a two time Southland Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Donte Hart was inducted for his contributions to the Garland Owls football team. He also participated in track and field. Hart graduated in 2000 and was a three-year football team starter. He led his team to the 1999 5-A State Championship.
Hart grew up in Garland and played sports from a young age. He was captain of the football team and was named First Team All-District and All-Area. Hart rushed for 2,008 yards and 33 touchdowns on the way to the state championship. He was named Most Valuable Player of the championship game.
Hart finished his HS football career with 2,850 yards then enjoyed success on the football team at the University of Tulsa.
Homer B. Johnson, who recently passed away, was also honored.
Outstanding senior athletes were recognized at the GSHF ceremony:
Shaliyah Rhodes, Sachse HS volleyball player was named Outstanding Senior Female Athlete.
Devean Deal from Naaman Forest HS, who played basketball and football and ran track, was named Outstanding Senior Male Athlete.
