The Bobby Boyd Golf Classic serves as a fundraiser to help keep the Garland Sports Hall of Fame up to date for future generations. The organization believes that the history of sports in Garland must be preserved as it enjoys a long tradition of excellence. There is one GSHF member from Garland High School from more than 100 years ago.

Numerous Garland athletes have enjoyed successful college sports careers, and some have made it to the professional level. One of those is Bobby Boyd, for whom this tournament is named. He played in the National Football League for the Baltimore Colts from 1960-1968.

The hall of fame was the dream of longtime Garland resident Gale Fields who was looking for a way to recognize the city’s athletes. Fields, with the help of Homer B. Johnson and several others made it a reality.
