GSO continues season with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1

Apr. 17, 2018

Garland Symphony Orchestra continues its 2017-2018 “Vienna, City of Music!!” April 20 at Garland’s Granville Arts Center.

The April concert will feature the GSO performing Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, “The Titan.” Since its premiere in Budapest in 1889, Mahler’s first symphony has become a monumental symphonic work, inspiring generations of composers and becoming one of the most frequently performed works of the 21st century.

Mahler originally titled his first symphony “The Titan,” giving program clues to help the audience understand his immense work. Although he chose to no longer use the title, the nickname has stuck, perhaps due to the sheer size and sound of the symphony. Set in four movements, the work opens with an ethereal harmony, reflecting the sounds of nature, then moves through moments of dance, humor, and beauty, finally ending with such fierce passion- the sound of which can rival only the cosmos. The music seems to transcend earthly emotions and cannot fail to stir the soul. Do not miss the opportunity to hear Mahler’s exquisite first symphony in its entirety!

Garland Symphony Orchestra credits its music director, Robert Carter Austin, for its continued outstanding and diverse orchestral programming. Maestro Austin’s background encompasses over 30 years of professional music experience and includes degrees from MIT, Cambridge University, and Stanford University. Maestro Austin’s musical experience includes conducting performances in many countries including: Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Spain, China, France, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Colombia, Philippines, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the United States.
