Scott Dougherty had been in the restaurant business for a long time when a friend introduced him to H Tea O. Founded in 2009 in Amarillo, H Tea O specializes in a favorite of all Texans, iced tea. Seeing the store in Midland convinced Dougherty that the concept and product were special.
“I decided to go for it and knew that the Garland or Richardson area would be a great place,” he said.
Dougherty then found the location at the corner of Buckingham and Jupiter roads, a spot with good traffic where they could hire good people and provide a great service.
Quality
The quality is what makes H Tea O so popular. All ingredients and flavors are natural. No syrups are used, and it’s sweetened with pure cane sugar. The zero-calorie tea is sweetened with all-natural Stevia. In addition, the water goes through a process called reverse osmosis which makes the water as pure and clean as possible.
“It’s the cleanest water that you can possibly have,” Dougherty said. “And that makes it a great base to put our tea in.”
Concept
Part of the concept is to encourage people to take the tea with them and enjoy it wherever they want. Customers can take it home to enjoy with family, to work to share with co-workers or to special events. That’s why there is no seating at H Tea O.
However, they do want people to come in and sample the teas. There are containers of all flavors and sample cups so that customers can try what they want. And, they can also mix and match as they wish.
“I just love this concept. It’s very simple, there are not a lot of things on the menu but it allows us to focus on the key thing, which is our tea,” Dougherty said. “We make it where it’s going to be hard to duplicate, replicate or imitate.”
Community involvement
Being involved in the community and making connections with people is also important to Dougherty. Employees of H Tea O have been out to schools, churches, businesses and more to serve people who are serving the community. In addition, as a community service, first responders can go by any time they are in uniform and get a free cup of tea.

The business already has lots of regular customers, some even stop by daily both before and after work. Dougherty said that they want to make connections with and become a part of their customers’ daily routine.
H Tea O has a drive-thru for customers’ convenience. In addition to 24-, 32- and 44-ounce cups of iced tea, gallons, half gallons and mini-gallons are available.
