Harmony Public Schools help those affected by tornadoes

Jan. 10, 2016

December 26, 2015 saw great tragedy in the towns of Garland and Rowlett.  Two tornadoes, an EF-3 and an EF-4 ripped through the area leaving millions of dollars of damage, thousands of people without safe homes and great personal devastation.

Harmony Public Schools, the largest charter school network in Texas, has two schools in Garland, Harmony Science Academy and Harmony School of Innovation. Both of these schools have students and families affected by the destruction.

Harmony is a family.  Not only do we provide exceptional, state recognized STEM-based education to our students, but we take care of our families and communities.

Two of our schools in Garland have multiple families affected by the tornado,” said Erin McCann, director of communications and community utreach for Harmony Public Schools in DFW.  Most have lost their possessions, many are displaced and the damages to their homes are extensive.”

Harmony is the largest charter network in the state of Texas, and our Harmony family has really rallied around this cause.  All 13 schools in DFW are running a coin drive with proceeds to our Garland/Rowlett families for the month of January, and all 46 schools in the state of Texas are promoting our GoFundMe page to collect up to $10,000 for our families to replace items lost in the storm.

Just this morning, a parent who owns a car dealership reached out to me and offered to donate a car to a family at the elementary school if their vehicle was lost.

Your kind donations will be distributed by our cluster superintendent, Mr.  Fatih Ay, directly to the schools to begin replacing items for our families.

While insurance will be helping with some of the losses, our families have an immediate need to begin replacing essential items such as clothes, shoes and food.
