Kim Nurmi received the Garland Chamber of Commerce’s Distinguished Leader Award at the Chamber’s 92nd Annual Meeting in January.
Nurmi, the city’s Heritage Crossing manager, was recognized for creating engaging and interactive programs and activities that benefit the residents of Garland and beyond.
She was instrumental in the creation of revolving history exhibits at the Garland Central Library, as well as bringing traveling World War II and space industry exhibits to Garland. During the pandemic, with shutdowns and social distancing, Nurmi spearheaded the idea of an outdoor self-guided cemetery tour program to allow residents to safely leave their homes while enjoying a historical lesson.
The Distinguished Leader Award is presented to a Leadership Garland alumni nominated by their peers in recognition of their continued service to others in our community since graduating from the Leadership Garland program.
“Sometimes you come across individuals who are not at the forefront of their departments or organizations, yet in their roles, are out guiding and impacting groups of people to work together to accomplish what they could not do working individually,” Leadership Garland Steering Committee Member Elisa Morales said at the award presentation.
Nurmi serves on the Garland Summer Musicals Board, the Garland Women’s Study Club and the Downtown Garland Business Association, among other organizations. Her continued involvement with Leadership Garland includes serving on the Alumni Committee for 10 years, including three as chair.
