Heritage Crossing offers fun, free activities

Aug. 25, 2022

Heritage Crossing has several fun and free activities planned for September and October. The Landmark Museum at Heritage Crossing is located at 393 North Sixth Street.

The Downtown Garland Scavenger Hunt begins Sept. 1. Start by stopping by the Landmark Museum to pick up information you’ll need. Then, visit the business described in its corresponding clue and pick up a souvenir pin. Each stop on the hunt has its own unique pin. If you need a hint, participating businesses will be able to help. Solve all clues and take the pins to the museum to get your goody bag. If a business isn’t open, let us know when you return to the museum. We will provide you with the pin you missed if your answer is correct.

Saturday, Sept. 17 marks the beginning of the Garland History GeoTour. The GeoTour goes live at 10 a.m. Sept. 17. Geocaching is an outdoor adventure using GPS technology for a modern-day treasure hunt. To play, participants use a Geocaching app on a smartphone or a GPS device to navigate to cleverly hidden containers called geocaches.

Visit Geocaching.com and set up a free account to get started. Thanks to a partnership with Geocaching.com, Garland has its own GeoTour! You can find a complete list of Garland History GeoTour geocaches by visiting Garland’s History GeoTour on Geocashing.com.

Download the official passport (coming soon) at VisitGarland.com and record your discoveries to earn a unique Garland trackable geocoin.

Garland Campfire Tales will be Saturdays, Oct. 22 and 29. Hear stories about murders, outlaws and other tall tales while sitting around a campfire. The event is on the greenspace next to the Landmark Museum at Heritage Crossing. Bring your own chairs and blankets. You’re also welcome to bring snacks and drinks. The hour-long story time will begin at 6 p.m. Be sure to stay for s’mores around the campfire from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The third edition of the Garland Cemetery Walking Tours will be at Mills Cemetery, located at Centerville Road and Commerce Street. The walking tour is self-guided, and guidebooks can be picked up at The Garland Landmark Museum Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The guidebooks lead participants through significant headstones telling stories of people and headstone symbolism. Gravestone rubbing materials are available at the museum. Ask the museum staff for the supplies.

Last but not least, don’t miss the Downtown Through Time: Garland’s Historic Square exhibit at the Landmark Museum. It’s a great exhibit that uses photos to mirror the appearance of the square in days gone by.
