Mustangs defeat Patriots
The Sachse High School Mustangs (5-0, 1-0) continued an undefeated season with a win over the Lakeview Centennial HIgh School Patriots (4-2, 1-1) Friday, Sept. 30 at Garland’s Williams Stadium. The score was 35-14.
Nate Shelton caught a 13-yard pass from quarterback Jalen Mayden for the first score of the game early in the first quarter.
The Patriots scored soon after when quarterback Kamron Fields connected with Calen Mayfield on a 52-yard pass for a touchdown, bringing the score to 7-7.
The Mustangs took back the lead near the end of the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Mayden to bring the score at the end of the first quarter to Patriots-7,Mustangs-14. Just a few minutes later, Kelon Wilson made a 35-yard scoring run to give the Mustangs a 14-point lead.
The Patriots scored late in the third on a 41-yard run by Fields to bring the deficit to one TD, but it proved not to be enough as Mayden got a TD on a 58-yard run and Christian Cole scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Mayden was 9-20 with 90 yards and collected 154 yards rushing in 11 carries.
Fields ended the night at 12-25 with 176 yards.
Owls defeat Colonels
The Garland Owls (2-4, 1-1) got a 31-23 win over the South Garland Colonels (0-6, 0-2) Friday, Sept. 30 at Garland’s Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
The Colonels scored first on a 1-yard run by Jaylin Sidney and the Owls answered when quarterback Joshua Brown took the ball in on a 4-yard run to bring the score to Owls-6, Colonels-7, but the Colonels soon got a TD on a 22-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Dabney to Brodris Mathews to bring the score to Owls-6-Colonels-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The Owls scored twice in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass from Brown to Josh Thompson and a 27-yard field goal by Joshua Chavez.
The Colonels scored once more before halftime on a Jaime Lopez 29-yard field goal to end the first half in a 17-17 tie.
The GHS defense tightened up in the second half and the offense added two more TDs on 3- and 7-yard runs by Brown and John Anthony Person respectively.
The Colonels’ Dabney and Sidney connected for a TD on a 12-yard pass in the fourth to bring the score to Owls-31, Colonels-23.
Both the Colonels and the Owls had a problem with penalties with seven each.
Brown ended the game at 6-10 for 86 yards and collected 154 rushing yards.
Sidney put together 154 yards on the ground for the Colonels.
NFHS over NGHS
The Naaman Forest High School Rangers (4-2, 2-0) got a 14-0 victory over the North Garland High SchoolRaiders (1-5, 0-2) Thursday, Sept. 29 at Williams Stadium.
Quarterback Broderick Hampton and Daviciea McCartney teamed up to get both touchdowns for NFHS. The first was on an 18-yard pass in the second quarter. The second came in the third quarter on a 10-yard pass.
Hampton threw nine times with six completions for 115 yards. McCartney put together 95 yards in four pass receptions.
Total yards gained on the night was 310 for the Rangers and 66 for the Raiders.
