ICON Virtual School program cancelled

Jun. 10, 2021

Dear Garland ISD Families:   We regret to inform you that the ICON Virtual School program will not open for the 21-22 school year. Although we fiercely advocated for the 87th Legislature to approve HB 1468, which would allow school districts to offer virtual learning and receive funding for such programs, the bill expired prior to receiving a vote. This bill was crucial to allow school districts to offer and fund virtual schools throughout the state. Without approval of this bill, newly created virtual schools are not approved or accredited at this time.

The Garland ISD team worked tirelessly to make this option a reality for our students and families. Although this outcome is a huge disappointment for all of us, we are hopeful that we will be able to offer our virtual school program in future years, pending legislative approval. Students who registered for ICON are still enrolled in their 21-22 school and program of choice.

If you registered your child for ICON because he/she is confined to the home or hospital for medical reasons, please contact Dr. Wendy Brower at wlbrower@garlandisd.net to discuss potential homebound services. Homebound services will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you have any questions, please email them to ICON@garlandisd.net.  We will place all FAQ’s on this webpage as they develop.

We are grateful to serve you and your children. You are an essential part of our GISD family, and we appreciate your partnership and grace throughout this unforgettable and unpredictable school year.
