Children of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Garland had a great time at a Christmas celebration Saturday, Dec. 17. The party, held at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Garland, was sponsored and planned by the Ikandy Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by professional basketball player Ike Diogu. The athlete’s mother, Jane Diogu, runs the foundation.
Diogu started his basketball career at Austin Academy and went on to be a star player at Garland High School. After playing college ball at Arizona State University, he went on to play for several professional teams including the Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings. Diogu was also a member of the 2012 Nigerian Olympic Basketball Team.
Linda Griffin, president of the Garland ISD board of trustees, was the event emcee and before the gifts were distributed, she talked to the kids about the true meaning of Christmas.
The children submitted wish lists and Ikandy Foundation volunteers shopped for and wrapped the gifts. The kids and parents also received a free lunch from the Chik-fil-A located on HIghway 66 in Rowlett. The restaurant provided more than 100 meals for the event.
Diogu believes strongly in the importance of education and giving back to the community. The foundation, according to its website, “is dedicated to improving the quality of life of underprivileged children with a special focus on promoting academic and athletic excellence.”
The Christmas party is only one of the annual events hosted and funded by the Ikandy Foundation. The organization also provides back-to-school backpacks filled with supplies before the school year begins in August.
