Independence Day DWI enforcement results

Jul. 13, 2022

From, Friday, June 24, through Sunday, July 10, the Garland Police Department participated in a statewide added DWI enforcement for the Independence Day holiday.

The additional enforcement resulted in the following:

  • 98 Traffic stops
  • 92 Citations
  • 48 Warnings
  • 1 Arrest

The additional enforcement was paid for by a state-funded grant from TxDOT, known as the Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) Grant. The enforcement targeted DWI along with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by Minors.

The Garland Police Department would like to thank TxDOT for their assistance in allowing officers to keep the city streets safe during the Independence Day Holiday.

TXDOT has launched a new impaired driving campaign called the ‘Faces of Drunk Driving.’ The program uses testimonials to remind drivers of the human costs associated with an alcohol-related crash. These real-life stories show the serious, sometimes tragic, aftermath when someone decides to drive after consuming alcohol. Drinking and driving is 100% preventable and can have serious physical, emotional and financial consequences that can last for years.

A DWI can cause a great deal of pain and sorrow ,as well as devastating results for everyone involved:
  • It can hurt or kill someone
  • It can be expensive and cause legal hassles.
  • It can create difficulty finding or keeping a job.
  • It is shameful and embarrassing.
  • It can result in a loss of trust and regret.
  • A DWI crash can devastate the lives of victims and survivors forever.

  • 3,896 people were killed in crashes in Texas in 2020.
  • 958 people were killed in crashes where a driver was under the influence.
