Jack Ingram wows Plaza Theatre audience

Fans of Jack Ingram and the Beat Up Ford Band had a wonderful time at the Plaza Theatre Friday, June 14. Ingram wowed the audience with songs from the 1990s up to a more recently written song about his dad. He started the show with “Mustang Burn” and ended with “Good Night Moon.” Those, along with all the songs in between, were great.ingram

Ingram’s sense of humor was also one of the evening’s highlight as he told stories about using his brother’s ID to get into Adair’s in Dallas, the club where he got his start as a musician. Everyone there knew him as Jeff.

Ingram cited Merle Haggard as an example of how country songwriters need to have had hard lives to have the ability to write good country songs. He followed that up by laughingly sharing that he hadn’t seen many rough times growing up on a golf course with a country club nearby. With his impressive list of songs, Ingram could just be proof that having a hard life isn’t a requirement for writing great country songs.

After more than 15 years of songwriting and performing, Ingram was named Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music — a great honor — maybe just a little late. He has also ingramwon the ACM Song of the Year Award. He has been nominated for Country Music Association and Grammy awards as well.

Ingram is also the host of a nationally syndicated television series called “Texas Music Scene,” and he hosts a podcast called “Jackin Around.”

He was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in February where he joined songwriters like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Townes VanZandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Murphey, Rodney Crowell, Robert Earl Keen and others.

Born in 1970, he grew up in The Woodlands, Texas. Ingram attended Southern Methodist University where he studied psychology and learned to play the guitar during his freshman year.

No doubt his fans are glad he didn’t pursue a career in psychology!
